Guiding Design Principles of Our New Town Center

Atherton Civic Center New Library April 2016

The Plan

Updated drawing for our new library, April 2016.

Balance Atherton’s historic charm with tomorrow’s needs…

The design will balance the desire to preserve our rural, residential charm with the need for a modern complex that has the technology and flexibility to accommodate changing demands.

Create a welcoming destination for residents…

Our existing Town Center has no inviting entrance, no sense of place. Upon arrival, residents find unattractive parking lots and service buildings. In contrast, our new Town Center will integrate beautiful architectural and landscaping elements that will encourage educational and recreational uses, as well as civic functions. It will be a welcoming environment in the tradition of Atherton quality.

Incorporate energy efficiency…

The site and buildings will be designed to maximize energy efficiency and environmental sustainability with regard to lighting, heating and irrigation systems, materials and more. Being eco-friendly is a priority for many of our residents.

Be budget driven …

Because this project will be funded largely from private sources, there will be virtually no margin for change orders or cost overruns. All architectural plans and cost estimates will be firmly established before breaking ground.

Solicit feedback from residents…

As financial supporters of the Civic Center, residents have been invited to review elements of the project—from budgets and blueprints to technology platforms and landscaping.
